With profound sadness, we remember Katie Kieffer, 35, of Darlington, Wisconsin, and Ben Randecker, 40, of rural Cuba City, Wisconsin, whose lives came to a heartbreaking end following a shooting in the Town of Smelser, near Cuba City, on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Their identities were released by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office on September 22.
Katie and Ben were known to each other and had shared a child. According to authorities, Katie had gone to Ben’s home on Rose Lane to drop off their child when the tragic shooting occurred. Katie died at the residence, while Ben was transported first to Southwest Health Center in Platteville and later to a Madison hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Behind these heartbreaking headlines were two human lives filled with moments, memories, relationships, and people who cared about them. Katie was a daughter, a loved one, and a mother. Ben, too, leaves behind people who knew him, loved him, and will carry memories of him in their hearts.
