Remembering Loy G. Nelson.
Some moments arrive without warning and leave behind a silence that words can never truly fill. Today, we remember Loy G. Nelson, 83, of Maskell, Nebraska, whose life was tragically taken in a devastating crash near Wagner, South Dakota.
According to preliminary information released by authorities, the heartbreaking collision happened at approximately 6:40 a.m. Thursday, September 17, 2026, on South Dakota Highway 46 near mile marker 298, about nine miles east of Wagner. Nelson was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado when his vehicle collided with a 2010 John Deere farm tractor near the Charles Mix and Bon Homme County line.
Investigators said the tractor, driven by 58-year-old Melvin Lee Cap of Scotland, South Dakota, was traveling west while pulling a loaded grain drill. As the tractor crossed the bridge, Nelson approached from the opposite direction. Cap attempted to move the tractor into the north ditch, but the Silverado struck the tractor. Nelson suffered fatal injuries, while Cap was not injured.
Behind the details of this heartbreaking crash was a life that mattered—a man who was someone’s father, grandfather, brother, relative, friend, neighbor, and cherished part of a community.
At 83 years old, Loy had spent decades creating memories, sharing moments, and touching the lives of those around him. His passing leaves an emptiness that cannot be measured by words.
