A Life Tragically Taken Too Soon.
With heavy hearts, we remember Bruce Gress, 42, of Toms River, whose life was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting, while Douglas Cobb, 51, of Toms River, has been charged with murder and remains at large in connection with his death. Authorities say the heartbreaking incident happened Friday morning outside the Wawa at Route 37 and Garfield Avenue in Toms River.
Bruce was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was later pronounced dead. Behind every tragic headline is a human life—a person who had memories, dreams, laughter, struggles, and people who cared deeply about him.
A life can disappear in a moment, but the memories left behind do not vanish. They remain in photographs, familiar places, quiet conversations, and in the hearts of those who loved and knew Bruce. His absence will be felt in countless ways, especially by those who expected to see him again, hear his voice, or share another ordinary moment that now feels priceless.
Authorities continue searching for Cobb, who is also known as Douglas Green and “Bootknock.” Officials say he was last seen driving a black 2016 Acura MDX. Anyone with credible information about his whereabouts is urged to contact investigators. Cobb has been charged, but the allegations remain accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Today, we set aside the circumstances and remember Bruce Gress—a life that mattered, a presence that will be missed, and a memory that deserves to endure.
