A Beautiful Young Life Silenced Too Soon.
Elijah Higgins, 19, of Hammond, Indiana, was among two young men whose lives came to a heartbreaking end Saturday after a reported shots-fired incident in the north alley of the 800 block of Truman Street. When Hammond police arrived, they discovered the two victims, turning a quiet place in the community into the scene of an unimaginable loss. For Elijah, a young man with so much life still ahead of him, the future he should have known was suddenly taken away.
Nineteen is far too young for a life story to end.
At an age when dreams are only beginning to take shape, Elijah should have been looking forward to countless tomorrows. There should have been more birthdays to celebrate, more laughter to share, more friendships to cherish, more places to see, and more memories waiting to be made. There should have been opportunities to grow, to discover who he would become, and to leave his mark on the world in ways no one could yet imagine.
Instead, those tomorrows became memories.
The pain of losing someone so young is difficult to put into words. There are losses that leave an emptiness words cannot reach, and Elijah’s passing is one of them. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths, and an adult male was taken into custody in connection with the investigation. Police described the incident as isolated.
