Family, friends, coworkers, and members of the Durand community are mourning the tragic loss of Christian Jean Bates, 54, of rural Durand, who was found deceased early Saturday morning at a Durand Township worksite.

According to authorities, Bates, a longtime employee and construction supervisor with Nelson Telephone Cooperative (NTEC Telecommunications), was discovered around 3 a.m. in a shallow excavation at the job site after he failed to return at the end of his shift. Concern grew when he did not report back as expected, prompting NTEC personnel to begin searching the area before contacting law enforcement.

The Pepin County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, responded after Bates was reported missing. Emergency personnel later located him at the worksite, where he was found unresponsive and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At this time, officials have not determined the cause or manner of death. The circumstances surrounding his passing remain under active investigation. An autopsy has been scheduled through the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnesota, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also reviewing the incident as part of a workplace investigation.
