With heavy hearts, we remember Sarah Elizabeth Barninger, 35, whose body was discovered on Sunday, October 18, after she had been reported missing a week earlier. What began as a search filled with uncertainty and hope for her safe return ended in heartbreaking sorrow when searchers located her in a wooded area approximately one mile behind her home in Chambers County, Alabama.

According to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, Sarah was found around 12:30 p.m. on property owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The remote location was inaccessible by vehicle, making the search especially challenging for those working to find her.

Before her discovery, investigators shared that surveillance footage showed Sarah walking away from her residence. Her cellphone, reportedly factory-reset, and other personal belongings had been left behind. Preliminary information indicates that her death may have resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Her body has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy, while the investigation continues.
