In Loving Memory of Vernel Faniel: A Life Lost Too Soon on Highway 29.

A Life Lost Too Soon on Highway 29.

On Friday, October 2, 2026, a heartbreaking two-vehicle collision on Highway 29, about three miles north of Troy, Alabama, claimed the life of 67-year-old Vernel Faniel. Shortly before 1:00 p.m., the 2012 Toyota Corolla in which Faniel was traveling was involved in a devastating head-on collision with a 2008 Nissan Altima. Despite the efforts at the scene, Vernel Faniel was pronounced dead, leaving behind a life that ended far too suddenly.

The crash also left three other people injured. The 55-year-old driver of the Toyota, a man from Troy, and another passenger, a 41-year-old man from Banks, were transported to Southeast Health in Dothan for medical treatment. The 31-year-old driver of the Nissan Altima, from Brundidge, was airlifted to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. Their conditions remain unknown as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

But beyond the roadway, the emergency response, and the investigation is a human life that can never be replaced.

Vernel Faniel was more than a name in a crash report. At 67 years old, he carried decades of memories, experiences, conversations, quiet moments, and connections that mattered to the people who knew him. Now, those memories become precious pieces of a life that can no longer be lived forward.

There are moments when words feel painfully inadequate. No announcement can fully express the weight of losing someone without warning. One ordinary Friday afternoon became a moment of unimaginable sorrow, and a journey that began like any other ended in tragedy.

May Vernel Faniel’s memory continue to live through every story remembered, every moment cherished, and every life he touched.

Gone from this world, but never beyond the reach of memory. May he rest peacefully, and may his memory forever remain a light in the hearts of those who remember him. 🕊️🕯️
