On October 14, 2026, a heartbreaking two-vehicle collision on Highway 97 near milepost 69 in Wasco County, Oregon, claimed the life of 75-year-old Mary Elizabeth Auch Hankins of Portland, leaving behind a painful reminder of how fragile and precious life truly is.
At approximately 1:18 p.m., Mary was driving a silver Toyota Venza near the Cow Canyon Rest Area when, according to the preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police, her vehicle pulled in front of a southbound blue commercial semi-truck while attempting to make a left turn. The semi-truck collided with the Toyota, sending it over an embankment. Both vehicles came to rest off the eastern shoulder of the highway. Tragically, Mary was pronounced deceased at the scene.
