A Dedicated Fire Chief Whose Life of Service Ended in a Heartbreaking Tragedy.

Some lives leave behind more than memories; they leave a legacy of courage, compassion, and selfless service that time can never erase. Today, we remember Brian Flanagan, 47, chief of the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company in Manchester Township, New Jersey, whose life was tragically cut short early Tuesday morning after being struck by an SUV while working in a construction zone on the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison Township, Middlesex County.

At approximately 3:52 a.m., Brian was working near milepost 87.7 on the south outer roadway, where two lanes had been closed for construction. According to State Police, a GMC SUV entered the marked work zone and struck him, causing fatal injuries. In a moment that changed everything, a dedicated public servant who had spent years serving his community lost his life while performing his duties.

Brian’s story is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by volunteer firefighters, individuals who answer the call to serve even when the work is difficult and the risks are real. Behind the uniform was a life filled with purpose, a commitment to others, and a legacy that deserves to be remembered with honor.

Police identified the driver as 40-year-old Anthony Bernardi of Edison, who was later arrested and charged in connection with the fatal incident. The investigation remains ongoing.

Today, the loss of Brian Flanagan reminds us how fragile life can be and how deeply one person’s dedication can touch a community. His absence leaves a painful silence, but the meaning of his service will endure.

May his bravery remain an inspiration, his memory a lasting light, and his years of service a legacy worthy of honor.

🕊️ Rest peacefully, Chief Brian Flanagan. You answered the call to serve, and your dedication will never be forgotten.
