A LIFE SILENCED IN THE DARKNESS OF A TRAGIC NIGHT.
On the night of October 4, 2026, a heartbreaking tragedy unfolded along U.S. 169 Highway between Evening Star Road and Pleasant Valley Road in Miami County, Kansas, where 45-year-old Curtis A. Thaxton of Kansas City, Missouri, lost his life after being struck by multiple vehicles. In a matter of moments, an ordinary October night became a scene of unimaginable sorrow, leaving behind a life that would never see another sunrise.
At approximately 10:00 p.m., a 911 call brought attention to a person in the roadway. A motorist reported that the individual was in the middle of the highway and had begun moving toward her vehicle, causing her to back away. While she remained on the phone with emergency dispatchers, she reported that the man had been struck by a vehicle. That driver turned around and returned to the scene.
But the tragedy did not end there.
As a Miami County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrived, Curtis was struck by a second vehicle. Investigators also believe a third vehicle may have been involved, possibly a black Hyundai Tucson with black wheels traveling northbound behind the second vehicle.
In the confusion and darkness of those devastating moments, deputies rushed to Curtis and immediately began lifesaving efforts. Miami County EMS soon took over his care, and he was transported to a local hospital. Yet despite every effort to save him, Curtis was later pronounced deceased.
Forty-five years. A lifetime of moments, memories, conversations, dreams and possibilities — suddenly brought to an end.
There is something especially painful about a life ending in the middle of an ordinary night. One moment, the world continues moving forward; the next, everything changes. A road filled with headlights becomes a place of mourning, and a name that once belonged to a living person becomes a name spoken in remembrance.
Curtis A. Thaxton is now remembered through the silence left behind.
His story is no longer about the final moments of October 4, but about the simple truth that a human life mattered. Behind his name was a person who occupied a place in this world, whose existence touched others, and whose absence will forever be part of someone else’s memories.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities do not currently believe foul play was involved and continue working to understand exactly what happened.
