With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we remember Gary Dewayne Mitchell, 60, of Auburndale, Florida, whose life was tragically cut short on Friday morning, October 30, 2026, following a devastating vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash in Lake Wales.
The heartbreaking incident occurred at approximately 6:11 a.m. near the intersection of 1st Street and Emerald Avenue. Gary was working with a Republic Services trash truck when he stepped outside his vehicle to direct a motorist around the stopped truck. Tragically, while performing his duties, he was struck by a northbound 2019 Chevrolet 3500 pickup driven by Jacob Trinidad Lopez of Lake Wales.
Gary was rushed to AdventHealth Lake Wales, where medical professionals fought to save his life. Sadly, his injuries proved fatal, and he passed away, leaving behind a heartbreaking loss for his loved ones.
Reports from the scene indicated that Gary was wearing a reflective vest and attempting to safely guide traffic when the collision occurred. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragedy.
