Schmidt, 63, of Preston, Kansas, tragically lost their lives together in a devastating collision on Friday, October 23, 2026, near Caney, Kansas. The fatal collision occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. near the interchange of U.S. Highway 166 and U.S. Highway 75, approximately three miles north of Caney in Montgomery County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Michael was riding a 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle eastbound on U.S. 166 with Barbara as his passenger. As they approached a curve, the motorcycle failed to negotiate the turn and continued into westbound traffic, where it collided head-on with a 2025 GMC Sierra.

Tragically, both Michael and Barbara were pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup truck’s driver, Gary Vanderbruinhorst, 73, of Peck, Kansas, and his passenger, Patricia Gail Vanderbruinhorst, 70, were not injured.
