Some mornings begin with ordinary journeys, familiar roads, and the quiet hope of returning home safely. Yet, on October 26, 2026, a heartbreaking tragedy on Highway 204 in Union County, Oregon, claimed the lives of two hardworking log truck drivers, Scott Charles Caldwell, 55, of Adams, and Curtis William Gammond, 54, of Pendleton, leaving behind a sorrow that words can scarcely express.

At approximately 5:54 a.m., near milepost 36.5, close to Elgin, an unloaded Kenworth log truck driven by Caldwell reportedly veered into the oncoming lane while attempting to avoid a deer. As he tried to return to his lane, the truck became positioned sideways across the roadway and was struck by a fully loaded eastbound Kenworth log truck driven by Gammond. The devastating collision ignited a fire, and both men were pronounced deceased at the scene.

In a single heartbreaking moment, two journeys ended, two lives were lost, and countless hearts were left to grieve. Behind every name is a human story, a lifetime of memories, and people whose worlds may never feel quite the same again.

Scott and Curtis were more than the drivers behind the wheels of powerful trucks. They were human beings whose lives mattered, whose presence carried meaning, and whose absence will be deeply felt by those who knew and loved them.

As the road eventually reopened and the morning continued, the pain of this tragedy remained. No words can erase such a loss, but compassion, remembrance, and prayer can offer comfort in the darkest hours.

May Scott Charles Caldwell and Curtis William Gammond rest peacefully, forever remembered and never forgotten. May their families find strength, comfort, and peace amid this unimaginable sorrow.
