A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken Indianapolis, Indiana, after 33-year-old Shatayvia Alisha Calderon allegedly killed her own 9-year-old son, Julian Calderon, in a shooting that police are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide. The devastating incident occurred Monday afternoon, October 19, 2026, at an apartment complex in the 4400 block of Village Lane, on Indianapolis’ northwest side, leaving two lives lost and a community struggling to comprehend the heartbreaking circumstances.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded around 1:05 p.m. to a report of a person shot. Upon arriving, they discovered Shatayvia and her young son suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, and a firearm was recovered. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.

Julian was only nine years old—a child whose life should have been filled with laughter, discovery, school days, innocent dreams, and the promise of a beautiful future. At an age when children should be protected, encouraged, and given every opportunity to flourish, his young life ended in circumstances no child should ever have to face.

The loss of Shatayvia, too, leaves behind a painful and complicated tragedy, with unanswered questions surrounding the events that led to this devastating outcome.

As Indianapolis mourns, this heartbreaking case reminds us of the importance of recognizing emotional distress and ensuring that people in crisis can access meaningful support before situations become catastrophic.

May those affected by this tragedy find strength, compassion, and support in the difficult days ahead.
